What is Virtual Design Construction? or What is VDC?
VDC or Virtual Design Construction is an approach to manage construction projects life cycle with clear visualizations. In other words, it allows to build digital twins of construction projects if done correctly.
For example, a subcontractor is prefabricating a building component in his manufacturing unit and is required to install the prefabricated unit on site. There will be several issues such as getting the dimensions correct before manufacturing, ensuring that prefabricated unit does not clashes with other building components and services, ensuring that it installs correctly on project site, ensuring the logistics is as per plan when it arrives on site, etc.
Through VDC services, we develop a virtual BIM model at LOD 300 level, then we add necessary details according to typical construction details to 3D BIM model ensuring that it is not clashing with other building services. Later, we animate the logistics and installation of prefabricated component as a 4D Construction simulation to demonstrate to all stakeholders of project that how the prefabricated component is going to install onsite.
What is Digital Twin?
There are several definitions available on Google for digital twin according to different perspectives of people and industry. However, in relation to construction industry, we can say that digital twin is the digital replica or duplicate of a construction project. We develop 3D BIM models using Autodesk Revit as a digital twin of the project design which is later used to
- coordinate and resolve clashes with other BIM models of the project,
